Our Favorite Fall Hair Updates

Source: Aveda

We’re in the dog days of Overland Park summer now, but autumn has already come and gone in the world of fashion—designers showed their Fall/Winter 2017/18 collections back in March. From vibrant greens to bold buzz cuts, the big styles of the upcoming season are all about having fun and living on the edge (at least aesthetically). Want a sneak peek of more things to come? Read on for inspiration.

DARE TO ACCESSORIZE

La Perla models graced the runway with long, loose waves set off by subtle embellishments. However, larger statement hair pieces are definitely A Thing, too. From oversized headbands to multiple barrettes, they’re a great way to liven up your style without the commitment of a cut or color change.

ROCK BLUNT BANGS

We’re loving the blunt bangs on this model, who walked in Christophe Sauvat’s Fall/Winter 2017/2018 collection during Lisbon Fashion Week. They’re especially flattering on oval face shapes, as they visually shorten a long face. However, bangs can be high maintenance, so stop by Par Exsalonce for tips on making them work (Plus expert advice on which take on the trend is best for your face shape!).

TRY A MODERN TAKE ON AN OLD TREND

The seventies are back: Portuguese fashion designer Filipe Faisca’s Fall/Winter 2017/2018 collection featured models with long, stick-straight, center-parted hair. Achieving this look is simple—especially if you remember how to wield a straight iron from its glory days in the 2000s. Start by blowing out hair straight using a paddle brush. Once you have removed every bit of moisture, (crucial!) go back over strands with a flat iron on its lowest setting. Don’t forget to prep with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother—you wouldn’t want humidity to ruin your look.

BUZZ IT (& BLONDE IT)

We firmly believe that everyone should try platinum blonde at least once in their lifetime, and for many people, buzz cuts are another bucket-list hairdo. So it should come as no surprise that a blonde buzz cut is the style for 2017. Celebrities from Zoë Kravitz to Katy Perry have taken the plunge, and it’s easy to see why. This bold, dramatic crop puts all eyes on you and your bone structure—and since most of your hair is buzzed off, you don’t have to worry about incurring damage from bleach. No, it’s not for the faint of heart—but cutting-edge trends rarely are. Want to try the look without going Full Metal Jacket? Try substituting a pixie cut for a buzz cut.

GO NATURAL

Sales of hair relaxers have declined 21 percent since 2011, thanks to the natural hair trend that’s led by icons like Solange Knowles and Janelle Monáe rocking their God-given textures. The secret to pulling off a true natural style rests in a great cut: couple that with quality, sulfate-free Aveda shampoo and conditioner and a good brush, and you have the foundation for hassle-free (and on-trend) hair.

EXPERIMENT WITH COLOR

Rose golds, dusty denim blues and muted lavenders have all had their time in the sun, but to paraphrase Kermit the Frog, it hasn’t always been easy being green. Until now, that is. When Pantone announced “Greenery,” a vivid yellow-green, as its color of the year for 2017, green hair was on. This muted, sea-foam shade is just as pretty as can be. Bonus: it makes blue eyes pop.

Even if you’re not ready to try something bold, we’d be happy to recommend more subtle seasonal updates to your cut and color.
